  The Sacred Band was the first Greek military Special Forces unit established in 1942 in the Middle East during the Second World War and consisted entirely of Greek officers from Army Navy Air Forces, including members from the Royal Gendarmerie, under the command of Colonel Tsigante.

   The Sacred Band fought alongside the British SAS brigade in the Libyan Desert and the Aegean, as well as with the Free French forces of General Philippe Leclerc de Hauteclocque in Tunisia. Then, under the command of the Lieutenant-General Bernard Freyberg of the New Zealand division and then under the British Brigadier-General Turnbull of the commando brigade took part in operations against the remaining German forces in the Aegean islands. After the liberation of the islands the Sacred Band disbanded in August 1945.

   
The sweater was granted by the British army to the members of the SB in the early years of the war. It was made of wool, braided in thick knit and feature was the way that closed the neck, regulated with the help of a cord. The body of the sweater was relatively short compared with long sleeves. The sweater was produced in many colors, from light brown and green to almost brick red.
   
Worn by men of the Sacred Band in all their operations because could keep their bodies warm during the frozen nights in the desert but in windswept waters. The 1st type was worn even by men of the Greek Expeditionary Forces in Korea.
