The Evzones, is the name of several historical elite light infantry and mountain units of the Greek Army. The unit is famous around the world for its unique traditional uniform, which has evolved from the clothes worn by the klephts who in 1821 fought the Ottoman occupation of Greece. The most visible item of this uniform is the fustanella, a kilt-like garment. Their proven valour and peculiar dress turned them into a popular image for the Greek soldier, especially among foreigners. The Evzone units, fought with distinction as elite shock troops in the First World War and the Asia Minor Campaign and they distinguished themselves for their fighting spirit suffering high casualties, especially among officers.
The Khaki Depot mod.1919 Evzon uniform (Asia Minor Campaign) consists of the following items:
-Fario, a khaki woollen fez with a long black silk tassel, with the national crest on the front (during the battle the silk tassel was removed and during the Asia Minor Campaign the fario worn under the French made Adrian helmet mod. 1917).
-Doulamas, a long heavy wool tunic with two side deep pockets and a first aid pocket.The basic colour of the winter doulamas according the 1917 regulations was darkgreen-khaki and it closely resembles the service uniform mod.1908.
-Ypodetis, a white shirt, front buttoned with narrow sleeves and brown buttons.
-Anaspastos, inside garter which holds the vlahokaltses in position via 4 buttons.
-Periskelida, khaki short breech made of wool, frond buttoned.
-Vlahokaltses, white woven woollen or cotton stockings.
-Epiknemides, the garters. They are made of elasticised black fabric with a pair of black tassel.
Towards the end of the Asia Minor Campaign, the anaspastos, periskelida, vlahokaltses and epiknemides replaced by the infantry short breeches with gaiters, while the tsarouhia replaced by boots.The evzones they are armed with Mannlicher Schönauer mod. 1903, 1903/14 rifles in 6,5mm, or Mannlicher-Berthier mod 1907/15 rifles, in 8 mm, with bayonets
