The Greek People's Liberation Navy, commonly abbreviated as ΕΛΑΝ, was the naval force of the communist-led Greek People's Liberation Army (ELAS) resistance movement during World War II, and later during the Greek Civil War. ELAN was essentially an auxiliary coastal force, operating mostly armed caïque and other small vessels near the coasts of the Greek mainland and between the islands. ELAN was also used by SOE, M04, OSS, to transfer agents and materials, from the Greek coasts to Turkey and the Middle East and vice versa. By mid-1944 however it had grown to about 100 mostly small armed boats and over 1,200 men, divided into seven squadrons of three or four flotillas with up to six vessels each. The Khaki Depot ELAN helmet is an Italian origin m33 (after the Italian capitulation in September 1943, large number of the Italian army materials passed into the hands of various organizations in Athens and province) repainted in black (black was the official color of ELAN) with a large red anchor and the lettering EΛΑΝ in side.
