Uniforms of the Greek Army in WW 1 » Greek Army Personal Equipment » WWI/ΙΙ Grenade Chest Pouch

Description

WWI/ΙΙ Grenade Chest Pouch [GB]
WWI/ΙΙ Grenade Chest Pouch
WWI/ΙΙ Grenade Chest Pouch [GB]

Hand grenades were more often carried around the soldier’s body, than in the special or field made carriers, although these were developed for this purpose – maybe the soldiers were not fully acquainted with this equipment, maybe it was not very practical, or maybe it just was not around in sufficient numbers … conclusion : this special equipment is rarely encountered in period photographs !
These bags are known for holding grenades, British made No23 Mk 1, French made mle OF1/15 or mle F1/15 what the Greek army used during WWI and in Asia Minor campaign and later in the ‘30s polish made M1931 grenades. According the memoirs the bags were made of a variety of canvas, shattered sandbags etc. with the grenades pilled in rows of 4, 8, 12,16,20 and 24. The all stuff was from heavy to the unsupportable. The bags were used by the Greek army up to the WW2.

This Khaki Depot bag is made from sandbags fabric and its capacity is for 12 grenades, hanging from the neck and secures around the waist.
